Apartment fire sparks evacuations in downtown GR

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD)— Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that forced people from a six story apartment building in downtown Grand Rapids.

The fire started Thursday afternoon in a fifth floor unit at Weston Apartments, located at 21 Weston Street SW.

From the 27th floor of Plaza Towers, Susan Wagener captured a photo of water pouring out the unit’s windows.

Deputy Chief Kevin Sehlmeyer tells 24 Hour News 8 the flames started in a child’s bedroom and were contained to one apartment.

The mother and two children in that apartment were not injured.

Everyone inside the building’s 96 apartments was safely evacuated.
