IONIA, Mich. (WOOD)– Some Ionia residents woke up to sounds of explosions Thursday morning.

The blasts came from a stolen pickup truck that caught fire, the Ionia Department of Public Safety said on its Facebook page.

It happened around 5:25 a.m. on Generaux Road at S. Stage Road in Ionia.

One witness told 24 Hour News 8 they heard three to five explosions.

When officers arrived, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.

Authorities said the intense heat destroyed the pickup truck’s license plate and VIN, so they had to wait for the stolen vehicle’s owner to come forward and file a police report.

Public safety officers said the vehicle was stolen from Ionia.

They were still on the scene investigating the crime about five hours later.
