BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Police chasing alleged bank robbers shot a suspect after they say the one of the perpetrators opened fire on officers.

The bank robbery happened at 11:33 a.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of Capital Avenue SW, Battle Creek police said.

Shortly thereafter, officers attempted to stop a vehicle that matched the description of suspects connected to the bank heist.

Police say the suspects fled and fired “several rounds” at officers before the driver crashed near Cherry and Elm streets.

“More shots were fired by the suspects and officers returned fire,” investigators wrote in a Saturday afternoon news release.

One female and two males were taken into custody, police said. One suspect was shot in the hand and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Local, state and federal law enforcement authorities will investigate the incident, police said.
