GMA surprises Benton Harbor coach behind turnaround

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WOOD)— A coach who came out of retirement to turn around Benton Harbor’s football team got a surprise from Good Morning America Monday morning.

24 Hour News 8 first introduced you to Elliot Uzelac earlier this month, after his Tigers made it to the playoffs for the first time in school history, and won their first game.

Monday, the entire school cheered on Coach Uzelac as he entered a surprise rally at Benton Harbor High School, which unfolded live on Good Morning America on WOTV 4.

Uzelac watched as player after player spoke about his hard work, thanking him for fostering their team and community.

Then came the $10,000 surprise – GMA partnered with RetailMeNot to create a $10,000 scholarship in Uzelac’s name at Benton Harbor High School.

“I hope this encourages all the students at Benton Harbor High School, because this is a great place with a lot of great people and we are the Harbor, no doubt about it,” Uzelac said.

The surprises weren’t over yet – GMA then announced the entire team was heading to Florida for an all-expenses paid trip to Disney World.

The surprise was part of GMA’s new “Thank You America” series. GMA airs on WOTV 4 weekdays from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
