‘Operation Handshake’ welcomes veterans home

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A group gathered at Gerald R. Ford International Airport on Wednesday to welcome veterans returning home for the holidays.

A number of people — including Patriot Guard Riders, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, American Heritage Girls, Blue Star Mothers, and others — participated in ‘Operation Handshake’ at the Grand Rapids-area airport on the busiest travel day of the year. They greeted veterans as they arrived home, offering cheers, handshakes and hugs.

“We want people to appreciate our military and those that have served in the past, because they’re the ones that have fought for our freedom and if we forget, then we also will lose sight of where we’re going as a country,” Blue Star Mom Deann Oliver said.
