PD: Gun fired accidentally at barber shop

DOWAGIAC, Mich. (WOOD) — A man accidentally fired a gun inside a Dowagiac barber shop, sending a bullet through the wall and into a neighboring restaurant.

It happened just before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Benny’s Barber Shop on S. Front Street just south of W. Division Street, according to the Dowagiac Police Department.

Officers who were sent to the scene learned that a 36-year-old man was showing a handgun to someone in the barber shop when he accidentally fired it.

The bullet went through the wall into Saylor’s Pizza next door. It hit a 15-year-old worker there, but police say the teen didn’t need any medical attention.

The man who fired the shot was cooperative, police said, and gave them the gun.

Police say the firing was accidental, but are turning the case over the county prosecutor’s office anyway. Prosecutors will decide if any charges are appropriate.
