Driver swerves to avoid carcass, hits house

DANBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman was hospitalized Wednesday morning after crashing her car into a house southwest of Portland.

The wreck happened around 10:40 a.m. off Keefer Highway near Emery Road, according to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities say the driver, a 21-year-old from the Portland area, swerved to avoid an animal carcass in the middle of the northbound lane and lost control of her car, The car ran off the road, continued between 100 and 150 feet, and then hit a two-story home.

The driver wasn’t wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. She was thrown to the floor of the vehicle and pinned there under the dashboard.

Firefighters freed her, and she was taken to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office says speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
