Authorities find gun, drugs during Kzoo traffic stop

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities in the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety found a loaded handgun and drugs during a routine traffic stop in Kalamazoo.

It happened around 2:45 a.m. on Saturday. Authorities say they stopped the vehicle in the 800 block of Woodbury Avenue for a traffic violation. Officers then discovered marijuana in the car. Authorities searched the car after finding the drugs, and found a loaded .40 caliber handgun under the front passenger seat.

The driver remained at the scene, but the two passengers took off on foot. One of the suspects, a 20-year-old man, was caught by an officer after a short chase in the 500 block of Florence Street. Authorities then discovered the man had cocaine in his possession. He was arrested on charges of resisting and obstructing and possession of cocaine.

A K-9 unit was brought in to track the other suspect, another 20-year-old man, and he was found hiding behind a home in the 700 block of Florence Street. He was arrested on charges of resisting and obstructing, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of marijuana.

Charges will be reviewed for the driver for driving on a suspended license and possession of marijuana.
