ALGOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Kent County authorities are investigating after a man shot and killed himself at a home west of Rockford.

It happened just before 11 p.m. Saturday at a residence in the 2200 block of Rector Street NE in Algoma Township, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said in a press release that 20-year-old Corey Newville recently obtained a handgun and was “playing with it” when he shot himself.

24 Hour News 8 was told by friends of Newville that the shooting may have happened during a game of Russian roulette. Kent County Undersheriff Michelle Young did not have any information regarding those claims and said that the department was still following up on witness statements.

She did tell 24 Hour News 8 that Newville was intoxicated at the time of the shooting.

Three peopled witnessed the incident. All three have been interviewed and are cooperating, the sheriff’s office said.
