Hudsonville knocks off defending Class B state champions

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — The Hudsonville boys basketball team used a late third quarter run to pull away en route to a 77-69 victory Friday night over defending Class B state champion Godwin Heights.

The Eagles improved to 2-0, while spoiling the Wolverines’ season opener and banner celebration.

Hudsonville trailed 31-30 at the half after senior Jared Blum made a shot as time expired in the second quarter.

Godwin led 45-44 late in the third before the Eagles went on a 9-0 spurt to grab a 53-45 lead. It was a lead they would never relinquish.

“We’ve played in big games so this is not new to us,” Eagles coach Eric Elliott said. “Godwin has a storied tradition coming off a huge year last year and they’re loaded. So for us to come in and have that mental toughness to withstand their pressure on their home court says a lot about the character of our group.”

Hudsonville’s Riley Coston led all scorers with 21 points, while Blum added 20.

Sophomore Markeese Hastings paced Godwin Heights with 18 points. Leon Redd had 14 and Christian Rodriguez chipped in 12.
