GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Through the hard work of a young cancer patient, what started as a $300 donation turned into a school bus full of Christmas gifts for other children.
After receiving treatment at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Dawson Babiak inspired his community of Hopkins and the surrounding school district to collect toys.
Dawson’s EPIC Toy Drive started with a $300 donation from a family friend.
Wednesday morning, Dawson returned to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital with family and fellow students to surprise patients with a bus packed more than $8,500 in toys.
“It started out as something we were just saying, but we actually filled a bus, and it’s awesome,” said Dawson’s father, Jason.
Child Life Specialist Rhys VanDemark said the donation was the largest the hospital has received in 25 years.
