No injuries in explosion at plastics plant near Grand Haven

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say no one was injured after an explosion and fire at a plastic fabrication plant outside of Grand Haven.

A call came in at 9 p.m. about a fire at Polyply Composites, located at 1540 Marion Avenue east of S. Beechtree Street in Grand Haven Township. A dispatcher said there was a report of a possible explosion.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Grand Haven Department of Public Safety Chief Jeff Hawke said a hazmat team was called to the scene due to the hazardous material used in the manufacturing process, but no chemicals were released into the air.

Hawke said damage was minor and contained to the southwest portion of the building.

According to its website, Polyply deals in polyester fiberglass compression molding.
