Hardware stores, tire shops swamped as people prep for storm

Customers get supplies ahead of a winter storm heading for West Michigan on Dec. 28, 2015.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Customers carted out bag after bag of salt Monday morning at the Rylee’s Ace Hardware store on Michigan Street in Grand Rapids.

Shovels and generators were also selling quickly as people got what supplies they need for the winter storm.

Many people are anticipating the possibility of power outages. A manager at Rylee’s told 24 Hour News 8 they have sold more than 40 generators at their three locations in just the past couple of days. As for the amount of salt sold — it’s too many bags to count.

It was also a busy morning at Belle Tire on Alpine Avenue in Grand Rapids. People are driving in last-minute to get their winter tires.

Managers there say it’s not uncommon for customers to wait until the day of a major storm before they come in.

To test your tire tread, Belle Tire suggests putting a quarter between the tread blocks of your tire, with George Washington’s head upside down. If you can see the top of his head, you may want to replace those tires.

In case you do lose power, there are a number of items you’ll want to have at home — including bottled water, heavy blankets, and a flashlight with batteries.
