Evacuation after report of smoke at Plaza Towers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — About 100 people were evacuated from a downtown Grand Rapids high-rise in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The evacuation at Plaza Towers, which is located near the intersection of Fulton Street and Monroe Avenue, happened around 3 a.m. after a report of smoke.

Authorities say someone called 911 and said smoke was coming from the elevator at the 13th floor.

Some people stayed in the lobby, but others were taken to nearby Van Andel Arena while firefighters checked the building for flames.

Nothing was found, and everyone was allowed back into the building a short time later.
