KDPS: Man with gun flees officers, arrested

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Kalamazoo police say they arrested a man early on New Year’s Day after they got calls about shots fired near a crowd.

It happened around 3:45 a.m. Friday in the area of Patterson Street and Woodward Avenue, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

KDPS says officers first responded to the area because a large crowd was forming. It then received reports that shots had been fired in the area.

Officers spotted a man with a gun in his hand, which he then put into his pocket. KDPS says the man ran off when he saw officers walking up to him, throwing the gun away as he was chased. He was soon arrested without further incident.

KDPS says it found the loaded semi-automatic handgun, which was discovered to have been stolen.

The man, a 22-year-old from Kalamazoo, was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing, and felony firearm.

There were no reports of injuries.
