GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kent County Sheriff’s Department says it is investigating after a jail inmate appears to have taken his own life.

Djibril Niyomungabo, 18, died Jan. 13, Kent County Undersheriff Michelle Young confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 on Sunday.

Young said that Niyomungabo was found unresponsive in his cell with a bed sheet tied around his neck in the early hours of Jan. 11. He was resuscitated and hospitalized, but died two days later.

Young said that cell blocks are supposed to be checked at least every 40 minutes. She said an initial investigation indicated that procedure was followed, but that jail surveillance video was still being checked.
She said there is not a surveillance video view of inside Niyomungabo’s cell.

Niyomungabo was being held on charges of larceny less than $200 and malicious destruction of property between $200 and $1,000.
