SAGINAW, Mich. (WOOD) -— A 2-year-old girl who was missing from Saginaw and her 15-year-old cousin have been found in the Grand Rapids area.
Mileah Hill and her teen cousin Makayla Williams are safe and in police custody, Saginaw police said Tuesday afternoon.
The FBI would not tell 24 Hour News 8 precisely how the children were found, but did say they were located on the northeast side of Grand Rapids.
An Amber Alert for Mileah has been canceled. The alert was issued Tuesday morning after the toddler was reported missing Monday night along with her cousin.
Makayla has been staying with Mileah’s family at a home in the 1500 block of Walnut Street in Saginaw for the last two weeks, Flint-area NBC affiliate WEYI-TV reports. The family believes Makayla took 2-year-old Mileah sometime overnight.
Around 10:15 a.m., Makayla also attempted to pick up her 10-year-old sister from Jesse Rouse Elementary School in Saginaw, but family members say she was not successful.
Police say Makayla is a runaway from Grand Rapids. Makayla’s mother, Amber Gustafson, told 24 Hour News 8 they had moved to Grand Rapids from Saginaw last April. However, she said her daughter ran away from their Grand Rapids home on New Year’s Day to live with her cousin in Saginaw.
Gustafson said her daughter has grand theft charges pending against her. She was a student at Union High School until November, when she stopped going to school.
Gustafson received a call from the toddler’s mother at 4 a.m. Tuesday telling her what happened. She told 24 Hour News 8 she has no idea why her daughter would take the 2-year-old.
Earlier Tuesday, Mario Williams called his daughter Makayla a troubled teen and said they’ve been having issues with her since they moved to Grand Rapids. He said that he wanted her to turn herself in.
Makayla posted a photo of herself with Mileah on social media on Tuesday, indicating the toddler was safe.
However, the family also got some messages indicating Makayla may have been with someone else or trying to get money. The family wasn’t sure if those messages were legitimate or being fabricated.
Late Tuesday afternoon, Mileah was being cared for at a confidential location in Grand Rapids and police were seen at that site processing a vehicle for evidence.
Makayla was taken to juvenile detention after she and Mileah were found. It’s unclear exactly what charges she is expected to face and whether she will be charged in Kent or Saginaw County.
*Editor’s Note: The Michigan Amber Alert website originally spelled the suspect’s name as Mikelah. They later corrected it to Makayla. The change was reflected in this article.
