NEWTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police are releasing the names of two men killed when their pickup truck hit a tree in Calhoun County.
Michigan State Police said 23-year-old Carl Tackett of Burlington lost control on the icy road, veered and hit a tree. Troopers said his half-brother, 26-year-old Olaf Samuel Boes of Marshall, was in the passenger seat.
Investigators said the men were last seen in the Marshall area around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. They believe they were heading to a home on Oak Grove Road.
A newspaper delivery person found their vehicle shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday near Oak Grove Road south of J Drive in Newton Township, southeast of Battle Creek.
The delivery worker said both men were unresponsive. Michigan State Police said they died at the scene.
Troopers said speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
