Teen escapee back in custody after armed robbery

ANTWERP TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 16-year-old was taken into custody after police say he was caught in an armed robbery after escaping from a juvenile detention center.

Deputies responded to the 24000 block of Red Arrow Highway in Antwerp Township around 6:15 p.m. Sunday for a reported armed robbery in progress at a business.

When officers arrived on scene, they noticed the teen standing in the business holding what appeared to be a pistol. The victim told deputies that the suspect was the only person still inside the building.

As deputies surrounded the building, the teen suspect saw the officers and attempted to hide the gun inside the building after which he surrendered to police.

After further investigation, police discovered that the teen had recently escaped from a juvenile detention center and was listed as a missing person. Police say the suspect had also broken into several buildings after his escape and stole several vehicles including one from Battle Creek that he drove to Mattawan.

The handgun that was recovered was a CO2 BB gun, according to police.

The 16-year-old from Custer was on probation out of Mason County and was lodged at the Allegan Juvenile Home on various charges.
