STANTON, Mich. (WOOD) — A man who admitted to murdering an 80-year-old man last year is headed to prison.
In Montcalm County Circuit Court on Thursday, Alan Lee Morse was sentenced to between 26 and 75 years in prison and was ordered to pay $24,782.83 in restitution. He also received credit for 197 days served.
Morse, now 49, pleaded guilty in November to second-degree murder in the death of Alan ‘Dale’ Nelson. The sentence handed down Thursday was in line with the terms of a plea agreement.
Nelson’s body was discovered in his bed in his Sidney Township home, near Stanton, on March 30, 2015. The 80-year-old had been shot in the head and chest, apparently with a .22-caliber rifle Nelson had stolen from another home in the area on the same night as the murder.
Months before he pleaded guilty, Morse admitted to Michigan State Police to killing Nelson, according to court documents. A judge later ruled the confession was obtained illegally and couldn’t be used against Morse.
