Battle Creek hammer attack suspect captured

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD)—A suspect in a brutal hammer attack on a gas station clerk is in custody.

Battle Creek police said Navjot Singh was arrested Tuesday afternoon.

Officers believe Singh was the man who robbed the Citgo gas station on Capital Avenue on Dec. 28. Surveillance video from the store shows the attacker repeatedly hit the clerk with a hammer during a robbery.

Police said the clerk was hit in the head before he got away and waved down a passing cab for help. The suspect also escaped.

The Battle Creek Police Department said U.S. Marshals Service and the New York-New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force were involved in capturing Singh, who had been on the run for more than a month.

Investigators said earlier that Singh is related to the victim.
