Police identify workers who died in fire of boss-owned home

Police and fire officials investigate a house fire that killed five people at a home in Novi, Mich., Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016.

NOVI, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say they have identified four of the five Mexican victims of a weekend house fire in suburban Detroit and are trying to determine their immigration status in the United States.

Novi police say those who died include 18-year-old Leonel Rodriguez, 23-year-old Miguel Diaz, 16-year-old Brayan Contreras and 18-year-old Simeon Nunez. They worked at Kim’s Garden, and lived in the basement of a home owned by the restaurateur, identified by police as Roger Tam.

The Associated Press left a message at the restaurant for Tam.

The fifth man is believed to be in his early 20s.

Novi Public Safety Director David Molloy says Tam called 911 Sunday morning to report the fire. The blaze and deaths appear to be accidental but authorities aren’t ruling out charges.
