Driver arrested after hitting child near GR school

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD)— A driver who hit an 8-year-old girl outside a Grand Rapids school was driving without a legal license, police say.

It happened just after 8 a.m. Monday in the 900 block of Baldwin Street SE, near Congress Elementary.

Police believe the girl was crossing the street mid-block when she was hit by a 59-year-old driver who had just dropped off his daughter at the school.

The 8-year-old girl was taken to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The 59-year-old driver was arrested for driving on a suspended license. Police said he may face additional charges.
