GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) The simple act of buying a hat can help a child battling cancer. A movement sweeping college campuses across the country is called Love Your Melon.

Love Your Melon is an apparel brand started by two college students at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2012. When a customer buys a hat, one hat is donated to a child with cancer. In addition, 50% of net proceeds go to CureSearch and The Pinky Swear Foundation.

Love Your Melon has spread to all 50 states through college students who act as Love Your Melon Ambassadors. Two of them in West Michigan are Mackenzie Frame and Alexa Asher from Grand Valley State University. They help spread the word and sell hats to classmates and other college students. Once they reached 100 sales, they were able to distribute hats in person to children at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

Love Your Melon sells hats including beanies, baseball caps, and other styles. They also have clothing, coffee cups, magnets, stickers, and more. Items are available for purchase online. New items are being released at 7 p.m. on February 8. When completing your purchase, select Grand Valley State University to help Frame and Asher earn points for their program.
