HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD)—Some students say fumes at West Ottawa High School are making them feel ill.
Parents and students who contacted 24 Hour News 8 say some kids are feeling light-headed and nauseous following an issue with an elevator in the school’s north building. Some West Ottawa students also took their message to Twitter.
In a news release posted to the school’s Twitter page, West Ottawa administrators said an elevator seized late Sunday night, causing a strong smell of burnt rubber through much of the building.
The district said maintenance workers discovered the issue around 5:45 a.m. Monday and immediately began clearing the air through the school’s ventilation system.
The district said the Park Township Fire Department determined there was no fire and no danger to students and the air quality is fine, except for the lingering smell.
West Ottawa said they will continue to ventilate the building until the smell disappears.
District officials told 24 Hour News 8 they’ve also emailed parents to alert them to the issue.
