BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) – Memorial arrangements are set for a mother of two who was shot and killed in a Battle Creek home.

Police said the boyfriend of 24-year-old Kayla Babick said she was accidentally shot when she laid on a gun that was sitting on a bed, causing it to fire. She died a short time later.

Visitation for Babick will take place 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21. Her funeral will begin at 6 p.m. at the Potter’s House Church in Battle Creek, which she attended. A private interment will take place afterward at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.

According to her obituary posted by Brown Funeral Home, Babick was born a “daddy’s girl.” However, she spent most of her life without her father, who was convicted of killing two children in the 1990s. Andrew Babick’s conviction was overturned and he was released from prison last year.

Police said there were no reports of problems between Babick and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Deangelo Gaines prior to the shooting.

Babick’s grandmother told 24 Hour News 8 the family is struggling to come up with the means to bury her and doesn’t know who will get custody of her two young children.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to cover funeral expenses.

**Correction: Citing Battle Creek Police Department sources, an earlier version of this article indicated Deangelo Gaines had accidentally shot Kayla Babick while cleaning his gun. Tuesday, Battle Creek Police said that since the beginning of their investigation Gaines had told them Babick laid on the gun on a bed, causing it to fire. The article has since been corrected.
