GR tax preparer sentenced for defrauding government

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids tax preparer who defrauded the government by filing a false tax return is heading to a federal prison.

Andres Orrego-Hernandez, 31, was sentenced to 18 months in a federal prison for conspiracy to defraud the government and aiding in the filing of a false tax return on Tuesday, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In addition to the prison term, Orrego-Hernandez will have to pay $371,648 in restitution to the IRS. He will also have two years of court supervision after he is released from prison.

Authorities say Orrego-Hernandez defrauded the government out of more than $371,648 in the conspiracy that ran between Jan. 2010 and May 2011.
