Officers rescue driver from submerged car

ORONOKO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – Two officers are being credited for rescuing a driver from a submerged SUV.

Just after 2 p.m. Thursday, Officer Robert Christner was called to Linco Road west of Scottdale Road, about six miles northwest of Berrien Springs. There, he found a Ford Escape upside down in a water-filled ditch.

Reserve Officer Ric Streelman, who owns an auto repair business, helped pull the vehicle out of the water using a wrecker. Christner broke out a window and helped pull the 22-year-old driver to safety.

The Stevensville woman told investigators she lost control on the slick, snow-covered roads before her vehicle ended up in the ditch, which had three to four feet of water in it, authorities said.

The driver and Christner were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries and potential hypothermia. Christner was released within an hour; the driver remained in the hospital Thursday afternoon.
