GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – While the majority of passengers involved in a flight fiasco that lasted nearly 17 hours are back in Grand Rapids, at least one family was still caught in transit Friday morning.
Dan Boersma, his wife and their 5-year-old daughter were in Georgia, driving back to Grand Rapids when 24 Hour News 8 contacted them.
Their flight fiasco started Wednesday morning when Allegiant Air Flight 682 from Orlando to Grand Rapids had mechanical issues, forcing the plane to return to its gate.
The passengers boarded another plan which also had a mechanical issue, then a third plane they boarded had a problem with the lights.
The Allegiant passengers ended up staying at a hotel Wednesday night.
However, while some passengers who boarded a fourth flight Thursday morning arrived in Grand Rapids, Boersma’s family ended up on a Thursday afternoon flight that was delayed again for yet another mechanical problem.
“We got off the plane and I just said ‘four planes is enough; we’re going to drive home.’ We went to the counter and told them to get our baggage, and now we’re driving home,” said Boersma.
The Boersmas rented a car and began the trip back.
“If they have four planes that are not capable of flying, we’re just not going to fly on any of their planes, because who knows what is going to happen,” Boersma said.
The last Allegiant Air flight Boersma’s family was on left Orlando after about a 3/12 hour delay. Flight 682 arrived in Grand Rapids just after 9 p.m. Thursday.
Boersma told 24 Hour News 8 he will be sending Allegiant Air all the receipts for his family’s expenses on the drive home.
Allegiant said it paid for passenger’s hotel rooms Wednesday night, and gave them $200 vouchers for future flights.
