KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Police have identified the 4-year-old girl who was found dead at a home in Kalamazoo Saturday.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officials responded to a report of a child not breathing in the 1100 block of Douglas Avenue shortly after 9:30 a.m., police said in news release Saturday afternoon.

The child, identified by police as Kharisma Richardson, was unresponsive when officials arrived on scene. Kharisma would have celebrated her fourth birthday the day her body was found, according to police.

KDPS Chief Jeff Hadley said officers are treating the death as “suspicious,” but did not provide further details.

A source with knowledge of the investigation told 24 Hour News 8 that the girl was found in a bedroom and had marks on her body that made officers suspect she may have been the victim of abuse.

Police took the child’s mother in for questioning as part of the investigation. There were other children living in the home as well.
