He was originally charged with open murder in the July 21, 2015 death of 34-year-old Steven Kauffman.

Rumpf fatally shot Kauffman on Wildwood Road in Orangeville Township, just south of Gun Lake.

It happened after Kauffman quarreled with his girlfriend, Morgan Wire, who in August testified that he was abusive to her. After they fought that day in July, Wire turned to her friend Rumpf to help her. They encountered Kauffman and there was an altercation in the road. Wire testified she heard shouting and a gunshot, then saw Kauffman lying in the road. She and Rumpf both left the scene.

When a passerby found Kauffman in the road a short time later, he was dead.

Rumpf was arrested later the same day at his home.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 2.
