GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A former Grand Rapids police officer convicted of a criminal sex charge for assaulting his ex-girlfriend is now facing child porn charges.

Ryan Bruggink was arraigned Monday on three new charges, including one count of child sexually abusive commercial activity, one count of using a computer to commit a crime and one count of possession of child sexually abusive material.

The crimes allegedly happened in various locations between Aug. 1 and Nov. 1, 2014. According to court documents, the alleged victim in the case is a 17-year-old who sent Bruggink several pornographic pictures. He allegedly shared those pictures with others.

Bruggink had “a relationship” with the victim when she was 17, court documents said, but there was no further explanation of the nature of that relationship.

According to the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office, the evidence for the new charges were found late in the investigation into the original sex assault charges for which Bruggink was recently stood trial. His defense team was made aware of the charges prior to his trial.

Last week, Bruggink was found guilty of third-degree criminal sexual conduct by a Kent County jury after his ex-girlfriend said he had forced his way into her home and sexually assaulted her. He was found not guilty of two other criminal sexual conduct charges and a charge of first-degree home invasion.

Bruggink is currently in the Kent County jail while he awaits sentencing in May for the CSC charge.

Two of the new charges are punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
