WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan’s oldest boxing tradition, the Golden Gloves are being held at the Delta Plex on Saturday.
Since the 1920s, the Golden Gloves has helped young people develop inner strength while mentoring sportsmanship.
Joe Louis, Muhammed Ali, Evander Holyfield and Floyd Mayweather Jr. all got their start in the Golden Gloves.
With goals of expanding the audience and finding the next great boxer, organizer hope the move to the Delta Plex will provide just that.
“It feels like it’s going to be a good move. Time will tell just where we go with it. We were seated in the armory for so many years it was sort of hard to leave there, but now that we are on the path to taking our tournament there it feels pretty good. I think it’s going to be a good year,” said David Parker, executive director and general manager of Golden Gloves.
