KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman has died after being injured during a domestic violence situation and police say they have fatally shot the suspect.
Kentwood police were called shortly before 9 p.m. to the Pheasant Ridge Apartments, located in the 3000 block of Pheasant Ridge Avenue SE in Kentwood, for a report of a domestic situation, according to police on scene.
When police first arrived at the apartment they noticed a large amount of blood through the apartment window. A man answered the door and told police nothing was wrong. Police started to search around the apartment when the suspect fled the scene.
Officers then entered the apartment where they found a 41-year-old woman lying on the floor. Police say they tried to perform CPR on the woman, but they were unable to revive her.
Police say a 7-year-old boy was in the apartment at the time, but was unharmed. Child Protective Services was brought in to assist with him.
Police were able to find the suspect by following his footprints in the snow. When police tried to take the suspect into custody on Breton Road near Edington Drive, police say he threatened them with a knife and that is when officers shot the suspect.
The suspect, a 43-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries, according to police.
The relationship between the suspect and victim is unknown at this time, and their names are not being released pending family notification. The name of the officer involved in the shooting is also not being released at this time.
The Kentwood Police Department is investigating the homicide, and the Kent County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Kentwood Police say more information should be released Monday.
