PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The West Michigan Whitecaps came up short to the South Bend Cubs in the 2016 home opener at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Crews worked early Saturday to clear the playing surface after a heavy amount of freezing rain and snow accumulated Friday night.

The Whitecaps recorded a first-pitch temperature of 36 degrees, the second-coldest opening day in franchise history. The only opener with a colder temperature was recorded on April 3, 2003 with the game beginning at 35 degrees.

The West Michigan Whitecaps were beat by the Cubs by 5-3.

The next game for the West Michigan Whitecaps is on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark against the South Bend Cubs.

Starting this year, the games are expected to be safer for fans. The Whitecaps have added more netting around the dugouts to prevent foul balls from hitting spectators.

It was the first time fans could try the winner of the 2016 food contest — Dutch Love, a combination of turkey pot roast, gravy, cheese curds and French fries wrapped up in a pita.
