GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – Today Susan Ford Bales attended the dedication of the Betty Bloomer Ford Cancer Rehabilitation Program at Mary Free Bed. The program is in honor of her mother, the former First Lady, Betty Ford.
The new Betty Bloomer Ford Cancer Rehabilitation Program is located in the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. It will help Mary Free Bed continue to provide high quality and cost effective rehab care, but now specifically for cancer patients.
Betty Ford’s mother, Hortense Bloomer served as the president of the Mary Free Bed Guild, that governs the hospital. Betty Ford was a member of the junior guild and Susan is now a honorary member of the guild.
The public view of cancer was changed when First Lady Betty Ford was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in the 1970s. Rehabilitation therapy helped significantly in her recovery.
The Cancer Rehabilitation Program is the first designated and comprehensive program in West Michigan. Since its inception, more than 430 cancer survivors have participated with inpatient rehabilitation.
