ZEELAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was critically injured after his car became pinned under a semi-truck in Zeeland Township.

The crash happened on eastbound business loop I-196 at Byron Road just before 9 a.m. Thursday.

Police say a semi-truck exited the highway, stopped to make a left turn and failed to yield to a car traveling eastbound on Byron Road.

The driver of the car, 20-year-old Miguel Gutierrez of Zeeland, wasn’t able to stop in time and crashed under the semi-truck, pinning him in the car.

Authorities say he was unconscious but breathing when he was airlifted to the hospital.

The semi-truck driver is considered at fault at this time, but authorities stressed that the investigation is still in its early stages.

The crash closed the eastbound I-196 exit to Byron Road, but it reopened around 11:40 a.m., according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
