GR couple killed in Montcalm Co. crash

BELVIDERE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A husband and wife from Grand Rapids were killed in a head-on crash in Montcalm County on Sunday.

Deputies responded to the crash on M-66 near Schmeid Road in Belvidere Township around 7:15 p.m.

According to police, the driver of a 2012 Audi S4 was attempting to pass several vehicles while traveling northbound on M-66 when an oncoming 1999 Buick LeSabre heading southbound on M-66 approached before he could complete the pass.

Both drivers tried to avoid the crash by swerving to the west shoulder resulting in a head-on collision.

The driver of the Buick, 88-year-old Raymond Wrona of Grand Rapids, was injured and taken to the hospital where he later died.

His 88-year-old wife, Mary, died at the scene.

The driver of the Audi, 26-year-old Joel Ibarra of Wyoming, was hospitalized with injuries. His passenger, 28-year-old Maria Mancha of Comstock Park, was also injured and taken to the hospital.

Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash which remains under investigation.
