GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOOD) – In need of a new drink to add to your repertoire? If you aren’t a heavy drinker or hate the burn of strong liquors, here are a few cocktails to cool your tastebuds and take the edge off a long day.
So you like a little something sweet to sip on? I get that! Fruity cocktails are a great way to enjoy a drink with out that punch-in-the-face burn that comes with some alcohols.
Cherry Vodka Sour: This drink is tasty, sweet, and refreshing. My favorite part about it is the sweet of the grenadine is countered by a good kick of sour from the sweet and sour mix. Customize this by taking out the grenadine and using grape flavored vodka. Grape vodka and sour is relatively low in calories and so good. A friend in college showed me this drink. I would like to think Nicole made it up herself, but I believe it’s called ‘Sour Skittles’.
-1 oz sweet and sour mix
-1 oz vodka
-1 grenadine (splash)
Sometimes it’s hard to find a drink you genuinely enjoy because it’s hard to get past all the sugary juices and syrups. If you’re looking for something fresh and a little funky, I have just the thing for you. What’s green and sliced and fresh all over? Cucumbers!
Cucumber vodka cocktail: If you like a fresh, crisp drink, make cucumber vodka your new best friend. The taste is subtle and fragrant, but keeps you coming back for more. Just pour over ice with a splash of water to curb the burn. Add a few fresh slices of cucumber and you’re good to go!
Tequila is a fabulous and diverse liquor. Not into chasing it with a lime and salt? It’s good in so many other drinks! While sweet margaritas and tequila sunrises are great, don’t be afraid to try something out of the box, it could be your new favorite drink.
Spicy margarita: I love these spicy-icy drinks. Try them anywhere you can get your hands on them! Luna in Downtown Grand Rapids makes one of my favorites in town. The strong taste of tequila is balanced with a spicy and surprising bite. If you want to try a spicy marg at your next girl’s night, All Recipes has an easy to follow Jalapeno Margarita recipe.
You love watching the slushies swirl in the dispensers, but aren’t sure what to try first? Frozen drinks are great for someone who wants to genuinely enjoy a cocktail without much alcohol in it. Great on a hot day, even better on a beach, never underestimate a fabulous frozen drink.
Miami Vice: My friend, Sarah, whips these up all the time and they are a special treat. Daiquiri and Pina Colada join forces for a drink that’s a little out of the norm.
1. Mix Pina Colada with 2.5 oz. of rum w/ ice. Set aside.
2. Mix daiquiri with 2.5 oz. of rum w/ ice.
3. While frozen, add Pina Colada mix to a cocktail glass. Add the daiquiri mix on top, keeping it seperated from the pina colada mix. Serve.
