GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A school on the southeast side of Grand Rapids will remain closed Friday after a small fire sparked earlier in the week, causing some damage.

The small fire started just before noon Wednesday in a special education classroom at Campus Early Childhood Center, located in the 1300 block of Thomas Street SE, according to Grand Rapids Public Schools spokesman John Helmholdt.

Students and staff at both Campus Early Childhood Center and Campus Elementary were evacuated because the buildings are connected. School officials said everyone made it out safely. Helmholdt said the building was mostly empty when the fire occurred because it was in between morning and afternoon classes.

Classes at Campus Early Childhood Center have been cancelled through Friday as crews clean the building to rid it of the residual odor and lingering smoke. Some surfaces also need to be repainted.

School is expected to resume Monday.

Campus Elementary was not affected by the fire and classes went on as scheduled.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
