Summer job program expands in Muskegon

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — Today in Muskegon, the United Way of the Lakeshore announced their continued partnership with DTE Energy Foundation.

A gift of $150,000 will go to the summer job program to employ 100 youth working in nonprofits around the lakeshore counties of Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Kent, Mecosta and Lake.

Besides for a paycheck, student participants will learn jobs skills, workplace ethics and the associated soft skills that will help them in their future careers.

“This will propel youth to further education and to jobs in the future,” Says Nancy Moody, the Vice President of Public Affairs for DTE Energy. “which will propel the Michigan Economy and that’s why we are interested in it”

“Without this, I wouldn’t have had this job or the experience that I had, so I appreciate it,” says Darius Ricks, a participant in the summer jobs program.

The collaboration also includes partners at Michigan Works! and the local government along with nonprofit agencies where the youth ages 15 – 18 will be working at.
