GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) For the first time, “The Phantom of the Opera” is on stage in Grand Rapids. The production, by Broadway Grand Rapids, is in town for 16 performances in the span of two weeks.
“The Phantom of the Opera” has never been to Grand Rapids because DeVos Performance Hall could not accommodate such large productions. Broadway Grand Rapids went to the city and asked to do renovations to be able to draw big productions.
Part of the big production is the iconic chandelier. It is one of the stars of the show, covered with more than 6,000 beads and weighing more than one ton.
More than 1,200 costume pieces are used during the show. Some of them were designed by Maria Bjornson, who designed costumes for the original production. Pieces from that original production are more than 25 years old.
The chandelier and the clothes aren’t the only stars! Katie Travis, who plays Christine, is from Michigan and says while she loves traveling with the production, it’s comforting to be home.
Chris Mann, who plays the Phantom, appeared on “The Voice” under the tutelage of Christina Aguilera.
“The Phantom of the Opera” continues through May 29. Tickets start at $54.50 and are available online.
