GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – The largest class of new priests since 1990 was ordained for the Diocese of Grand Rapids Saturday morning.
The ordination took place at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Grand Rapids. Four men were ordained into priesthood.
Former Deacons, now Fathers, Thomas J. Cavera, Patrick Jegar N. Fickel, Colin J. Mulhall and Daniel P. Schumaker were all ordained.
Father Colin J. Mulhall spoke to 24 Hour News 8 about the ordination and being a part of the largest class to be ordained in several years.
Though there are slightly fewer men being ordained this year than last, the numbers in prior years show a gradual increase in vocations to the priesthood nationwide, according to the Diocese of Grand Rapids.
“We won’t see the effects for a number of years, but I think we’re beginning to see the effects and I think Pope Francis is a part of it, a driving force behind that,” he said.
Father Ron Hutchinson, the Director of the Office of Priestly Vocations, also spoke, saying it is a great day for the Diocese of Grand Rapids and that he was looking forward to the ordination.
The Diocese of Grand Rapids serves over 190,000 Catholics, 82 parishes and 30 schools across West Michigan.
