HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Holland-area man who was rescued from a submerged car in Holland Township has died, according to hospital officials.

Jeffrey Adkins, 51, was northbound on Wellness Drive near Riley Street when his vehicle hopped a curb and rolled into the pond around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Adkins’ car had to be pulled out of the water before he could be freed.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Robert Tease said the driver had been in the water for about 30 minutes and was unconscious when crews reached him.

Adkins was rushed to Holland Hospital where he died early Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for the hospital told 24 Hour News 8.

It’s not yet known what caused the vehicle to crash into the pond. Authorities say they are still investigating.
