Authorities: Teen drowns after jumping off pier at Silver Beach

SAINT JOSEPH, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a teenager is dead after he jumped off of a pier in Berrien County and never resurfaced.

It happened around 7:20 p.m. Saturday at Silver Beach in St. Joseph. Authorities say 17-year-old Travonne Shannon was jumping off of the south pier with a relative when he did not resurface after one of the jumps.

Crews searched for about two hours before finding Shannon’s body floating in about 14 feet of water around 9:20 p.m. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say Shannon was a junior at Benton Harbor High School.

Berrien County Sheriff’s deputies and Saint Joseph Department of Public Safety officers said jumping off piers is “extremely dangerous” and should not be done.
