GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) –- A motorcycle passenger was killed and the driver injured in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on US-31 south of Grand Haven, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Edward Johnston, 65, of Vinton, LA, was driving a motorcycle with 55-year-old Elizabeth Johnston, also of Vinton, as his passenger around 11:45 a.m. on northbound US-31 when he got distracted and rear-ended a Chevy Silverado pickup in backed-up traffic near Comstock Street in Grand Haven Township, the sheriff’s office said.

Elizabeth Johnston was ejected from the bike in the crash. She died from her injuries at the scene, police said.

Edward Johnston was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his non-life threatening injuries. Authorities said he wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck wasn’t hurt.

The northbound lanes of US-31 remained closed for about two hours as authorities investigated the crash.
