GREENVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman who hit and killed a 4-year-old boy in Greenville last year is heading to jail.

Susan Rieckman, 70, was sentenced to one year in Montcalm County Jail, five years of probation and 150 hours of community service.

Rieckman was driving a pickup truck when she hit and killed 4-year-old Talos Bills in downtown Greenville in September 2015. Police said Rieckman was on M-57 turning left onto M-91 when she hit the boy in a crosswalk.

State records show Rieckman’s license was suspended in July 2014 for medical reasons.

Her attorney said Thursday she was on a number of medications, had brain surgery in 2005 and a stroke in March.

“This has turned my life upside down. He was my only child and he was my miracle baby. I wasn’t supposed to have kids. For him to be 4 and to be taken away from me so quick is just atrocious,” Ladonna Wright, Talos’s mother, said in court before Rieckman’s sentence was handed down. “I don’t know what he did wrong that morning crossing the street and I don’t understand it. I don’t think I ever will. I wish people would’ve paid attention. My 4-year-old is not a speed bump.”

Rieckman said she was sorry for the family’s loss.
