GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) –- A group in Grand Rapids has decided to sell refurbished desktop computers to the community for hundreds of dollars less than the normal asking price.
The Geek Group, located on Leonard Avenue NW in Grand Rapids, said they want to make sure every kid in the city has access to a computer of their own.
The offer started last week and was initially just for families who live on Grand Rapids’ West Side. It was posted on the “We Are Westsiders” Facebook page, and organizers said it immediately took off. Since then they have expanded the offer to all families who live in Grand Rapids.
The group is selling complete desktop computer systems for just $50. If someone wants only the computer itself, the cost is $40.
While the computers aren’t brand new, they come with a Dual Core 3.0GHz Intel processor, 2GB of Ram, 160GB SATA hard drive, and Ubuntu Linux 16.04 LTS operating system.
The computers are designed for families with children who need a computer to do homework and for people who cannot otherwise afford a computer.
Chris Boden from the Geek Group spoke to 24 Hour News 8 about the offers saying the hard drive alone could cost around $100.
“It’s been really cool to have this visceral, real impact on somebody’s life. They [the Geek Group workers] get to see that their work is directly touching lives and that’s better than any paycheck we’re gonna get. They’re going nuts over it so we need more, we need more computers because they’re out there, but they’re getting thrown away,” said Boden.
Boden said they encourage people to continue to donate computers to The Geek Group so they can keep selling computers to families for $50 in the foreseeable future.
The Geek Group offers a number of workshops from computer labs to laser labs, woodworking, metal working, and robotics.
