WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) — A ribbon-cutting was held Wednesday for the new wetlands boardwalk at Millennium Park in metro Grand Rapids.

The boardwalk connects a popular nature trail to the trail around the main lake at the park. The nearly 3-mile stretch is now named the Sandy Hansen Shoreline Trail for a “passionate” parks patron who died in 2014, according to the Kent County Parks Department. The funding for the project was donated in Hansen’s memory.

The boardwalk includes a 570-foot pedestrian bridge that rises about 24 feet above the wetlands in some places. Designed to look like a railroad bridge, it took several months to build.

It is part of a $3 million expansion at Millennium Park in Walker that also includes a new picnic pavilion that will seat 300. That expansion was scaled down after bids came in about $1.6 million higher than expected.
