PAW PAW, Mich. (WOOD) — A man accused of stabbing his neighbor repeatedly at her senior citizen’s apartment home has been found mentally incompetent.

Daniel Eric Woodruff was found incompetent to stand trial and was remanded to a state psychiatric facility for treatment in an attempt to treat his mental illness so he can eventually stand trial.

He was arrested in connection with the early morning stabbing and home invasion on March 29 at the McDowell Apartments in Hartford.

Woodruff lived in the same apartment complex where victim Charlotte Young, 61, was stabbed repeatedly after he allegedly waked into her home through an unlocked door just before 4 a.m. and attacked her.

Young suffered six stab wounds. Authorities said the knife blade broke off inside the victim and punctured her lung.

Neighbors say Woodroff is an odd man who was frequently seen wandering about town. Young’s boyfriend, George Segelstrom said Woodruff was known as “Crazy Dan” among those living in the complex.

Woodruff had no past criminal history in Michigan prior to his arrest in connection with this case, state police records show.
